Nature's Gifts
The Sunbirds and their Baby.
A week or so earlier, we saw a black-necked sunbird. And admired it from afar. Now we reaslised it was on a recce mission to find a spot for a nest. With amazing speech, the sunbirds built their nest. And laid the inside with soft pretty petals!
Then the Mama Sunbird laid the eggs (two), and hatched them.
Then Mama and Papa Sunbirds went in search of food, and flew back swiftly ever so often to feed the babies.
Unfortunately, one died, while still black in colour and with the short beak.
The other continued to develop, growing into a fluffy cute sunbird with a yellow chest of feathers (like its mother) and a long beak. Slowly it ventured out of the nest. And even fell into the pond one Fri afternoon! Slowly it flapped its wings, egged on by an impatient Papa Sunbird. Soon it could fly across the waters!
But the Baby Sunbird still needs feeding. With its shrill chirp, it calls for its parents. And they fly swiftly, checking first that the coast is clear before they feed.
Soon the Baby Sunbird will slim down and will fly off. Then we'll wish it and its family fare thee well! Fare thee well!
