Though Tao Li didn't get a medal for the 100 m butterfly event at the Beijing Olympics this morning, I think she showed tremendous determination and perseverance. Well, she broke two records the past two days, and now holds the Asian record from her timing at yesterday's semi-finals, and she's the first Singaporean to make it to the Olympics finals!
Her can-do spirit is awesome and inpiring!
There seems to a near-epidemic of can-do spirit recently?
The sense of wanting to do their best and to put up a marvellous show at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, epitomised to great heights by the torch-lighting by former gymnast Li Ning, and the example of little hero Lin Hao from Sichuan, all spoke volumes of steel determination.
Fresh from the viewing of the "Red Cliff" ( 赤壁 ) blockbuster, the can-do spirit in the movie still rings in the mind. How the army of Liu Bei, shrewdly and strategically steered by the admirable Zhu Ge Liang, together with the army of Sun Quan, led by the capable Zhou Yu, defeated Cao Cao's army that far outnumbered them. One could feel the enormity of the situation when they were faced with the huge army coming towards them. Yet they could really think on their feet and came up with strategies to out-maneouvre the enemy. Their belief in their cause, in themselves, their fellow comrades, their togetherness, were overwhelmingly humbling. The battle of the Red Cliff is aptly called the battle of the heart ( 心战 ).
If our teams could have the same can-do spirit, we can overcome (cliched this may sound).
心莲心 The heart is crucial indeed.
